Courses in Ramallah and Gaza

From 2011 to 2018 Sytse and Marlies Tjallingii were giving training in communication skills in Ramallah en Gaza. The courses are named: "Your unlimited powers". In these courses, they train the 15-30 participants in a combination of fundamental methods of communication and non-violent communication. Inicially they are invited again by the leaders of the Youth Programme in Palestine AFSC, American Friends Service Committee) the US Quaker Relief Work Organization, to come to Ramallah and Gaza to continue to come and give communication courses. Later the Director of the Youth Prison/Rehabilitaion Centre Dar al Amal in Ramallah and the Arabic Educational Institute in Bethlehem we asked us to train their staff and students. All the trainingen in Ramallah are organised by Hekmat Bessiso from Alkafa'at. She is also our translator and becomes more and more our co-trainer.
They find it exciting and are also pleased that they can contribute to what the people of Ramallah and Gaza are asking them to do, what can support local people in their needs. The situation in Gaza is much more serious than in the West Bank. These are courses in communication skills with some basic methods of NLP and an introduction to nonviolent communication.

They are very grateful for the support they received from a wide range of people who feel connected with the situation in Palestine. However, there is still a significant deficit for the courses given in April and for the the courses to give in October 2014 in Gaza. This is why weappeal to ask you to support this project.

Sytse and Marlies Tjallingii train the participants to appriciate their own cultural values and spiritual identity even more to appreciate. They allow people to experience that it is possible to use their inner resources in order to feel more strength. Their students learn to take initiative more easier and to recognize their needs and see how they can meet the needs of the community.

Why are these courses so important?
Because people in general and especially in difficult situations tend to blame others, in stead of loking for ways to improve these situations themselves. Training in commnication skills like: listening, respecting different opinions, communicating non-violent, understanding how internal representations of the outside world are formed (i.g. enemy images), influence of the use of motivational language, etc.. The participants share during the course their own experiences of their lives under occupation and the threats of violence. In the course, they look for more options to improve living in this difficult and challenging situation.

They exercise the following questions:
How can you improve your communication?
How do you communicate in a way that others really get the feeling that you understand them and that they are heard?
How do you really achieve what you want in your life?
What message would you give to your subconscious to give you more confidence?
How can you feel confident in your work, your personal life, in society?
How can you use conflict as an opportunity to build a more stable society?

What kind of course?
In these courses Sytse and Marlies create a safe atmosphere, with alternation of validations, reflections, sharing, playing, singing, theory, many exercises with the experiences of the participants themselves. The courses are more solution focused than problem-oriented. They give the same kind of courses and workshops in The Netherlands, Croatia, Israel, Gabon, Brussels, US, Canada and other countries where they are asked to come. They draw on their experience as NLP Trainers, AVP (Alternative to Violence Program) trainers, trainers in Non-Violent Communication and co-counselors gained in the Netherlands, Croatia, Gabon, United States and Canada.
The participants are working as youth leaders, teachers, social workers, counselors, therapists, but also students, buziness people, mothers fathers, etc.. The Courses in Palestine each consist of 30 hours of training five days. In Ramallah they are organized by the Friends International Center and in Gaza City by the AFSC-office in Gaza. Each participant (or employer) pays himself a modest fee, according to the level of income. For the hire of the trainings location, the translation (English-Arabic), the translation and printing of handbooks and logistics of the trainers is much more needed. The trainers offer their time and knowledge for free (they are retired University teachers).
